Japan's most spine-chilling spectre 👻
In Japan, there is a spooky legend that schoolchildren often whisper to each other about Hanako-san, a child ghost that is said to reside in school restrooms. According to the story, during World War II, a child lost her life during an air raid while playing hide-and-seek, and her spirit still haunts the schools of Japan.
Japanese students sometimes dare each other to summon Hanako-san by knocking thrice on a stall door in a girls' restroom and asking if she is there. If the ghost is present, she will reply, "Yes, I am." Some claim to have seen the hand of Hanako-san, while others say that some children have been pulled into the stall and caught a glimpse of Hell.
There are many versions of the Hanako-san legend, and it remains an ongoing symbol of Japan's mysterious and haunting folklore. The legend of Hanako-san has even made its way into films, manga, anime, and video games.
