1. Tony Abbott eats a raw onion like an apple
Onion is one of the most likeable veggies out there.
It goes great on sausage sangas and it's the base for many fantastic meals. But no matter how much you think you like onions, you will never like them as much as Tony Abbott does.
The former Australian Prime Minister was filmed chomping on a raw onion like it was an apple and he didn't even flinch. He later said that he wanted to show people that onions were nothing to be afraid of. We're not sure if anyone started eating raw onions because of Tony but we do know that this moment was pretty hilarious.
2. Scott Morrison holidays in Hawaii (during a devastating east coast bushfire season)
Uptown Pokies is a big fan of going on holidays... especially when it's to a lovely tropical destination like Hawaii. But there's a time and a place for everything, and Sco-Mo going on holiday during one of Australia's most devastating bushfire seasons was wrong for many reasons.
Not only did it make him look out of touch, but it also made him look like he didn't care about the people who were suffering.
To make matters worse, his office tried to cover it up by saying he was actually on a "family holiday". We're not sure what's funnier... the fact that he went on holiday or the fact that his office tried to cover it up.
Either way, this moment was kinda funny (but also a little bit messed up).
3. Bob Katter's marriage equality speech
Bob Katter is a larger-than-life character that's become an internet sensation for his hamfisted speeches and almost unbelievable acts of idiocy, so it's no surprise that he's found his way onto this list.
The moment in question came when he was asked about his views on marriage equality and instead of answering the question, he decided to pivot to a discussion about crocodile maulings.
Yes, you read that correctly.
He actually tried to diverge from the question by bringing up the subject of crocodile maulings in the Northern Territory, so therefore marriage equality wasn't an issue that we should be worrying about.
As expected, the internet had a field day with this one and Bob Katter quickly became the poster boy for the "vote no" campaign.
4. Pauline Hanson invites people to call her a racist. People do.
Like Bob Katter, we could do a whole list of Pauline Hanson quotes. Practically everything that comes out of her mouth is funnier than the last thing.
But the funniest moment has to be when she invited people to call her a racist. It was during her maiden speech to parliament when she declared:
“I and most Australians want our immigration policy radically reviewed and that of multiculturalism abolished. I believe we are in danger of being swamped by Asians. Between 1984 and 1995, 40% of all migrants coming into this country were of Asian origin. They have their own culture and religion, form ghettos and do not assimilate. Of course, I will be called racist, but if I can invite whom I want into my home, then I should have the right to have a say in who comes into my country. A truly multicultural country can never be strong or united.”
For the first time ever, Hanson was right about one thing. People did call her a racist and they continue to do so to this day.
5. Barnaby Joyce and the "bonk ban"
Finally, we can't write an article about the funniest moments in Australian politics without mentioning the now infamous "bonk ban".
The bonk ban was introduced by then Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in an attempt to stamp out sexual misconduct within his party. It backfired spectacularly when it was revealed that the leader of the national party Barnaby Joyce was having an affair with a member of his staff.
The most ridiculous part about the whole saga was that Joyce's wife was actually pregnant with his child at the time. So not only did he break the bonk ban, but he also broke it during a time when a man should be extra supportive to his wife.
Ouch.
Throw in the fact that Joyce had only just come out and said that we should abstain from voting yes on same-sex marriage in an effort to protect "the sanctity of marriage", and you've got one of the most ludicrous and hypocritical moments in Australian political history.
