Glenn McGrath's red card
To this day, nobody knows why cricket umpire Billy Bowden brought a red card to the first ever friendly T20 international between Australia and New Zealand.
It really is a mystery considering the game was played for fun. Both teams wore retro cricket clothing and players were filmed smiling throughout the entire day. So when Glenn McGrath imitated the infamous “underarm ball” and earned himself a red card, many Australians were left shaking their head wondering what the heck just happened.
Cadel Evans wins the Tour de France
The Tour de France is perhaps the most physically demanding challenge in the world. Cyclists must complete 21 stages and ride close to 3,500 km through mountains, hills, farmland and cities.
In 2011, a 34-year-old Australian by the name of Cadel Evans began the Tour de France. One of the oldest riders in the race, he was never expected to go the distance. So when he took the lead during the second last stage, everyone in Oz held their breath.
He then went on to set the second-fastest time in the trial and ride into Paris as the champ. An incredible day for Cadel and a historic moment for Australia.
The 1983 America's Cup
The America’s Cup belonged to America for 132 years. Since its beginning in 1870, yachts from the US won 25 consecutive titles – the longest winning streak in any major sport.
Many other countries had tried to knock America off its perch, but it wasn’t until 1983 that this feat was finally accomplished. Sailed by a group of blokes from Fremantle, the Australia II broke this winning streak in superb fashion thanks to its innovative winged keel, which gave the boat superior speed.
What makes this win even more amazing is that the crew clawed their way back from a 3-1 deficit. This outstanding effort saw them win the oldest trophy in international sports.
Thorpe wins gold in Sydney
Australia has produced scores of quality male and female swimmers, but none more famous than our boy Ian “Thorpy” Thorpe.
His greatest moment in the pool was undoubtedly at the Sydney Olympics. It involved Thorpy, Michael Klim, Chris Fydler and Ashley Callus all teaming up to take on the Americans in the 4x100 m relay.
Up until this point, the Americans had never lost a 4x100 m relay at the Olympics. But in front of a home crowd with everyone waving kangaroo flags and chanting their names, our boys in togs weren’t about to let the nation down.
After trailing the entire way, the final lap came down to the wire. Thorpy swum as the anchor and came from half a body length behind American Gary Hall Jr to touch the wall first; winning gold for Australia and setting a new world record for the event.
The 2013 US Masters
Everyone can remember the moment when the first-ever Aussie won the US Masters.
Taking place in 2013, it was the understated Adam Scott who claimed the honour, defeating Argentinian Angel Cabrera. What made this event so exciting though was the fact that it was won during a sudden death playoff.
Cabrera’s putt stopped mere millimetres from the hole while everyone held their breath expecting it to fall in. When it didn’t and Adam Scott sunk his from 4 m out, it sealed the deal for our Australian golfing hero.
