We could all use a holiday after such a turbulent first half of 2020, but not every state and territory is opening borders at this present moment. So to ensure you can still get your travel fix, we’ve created a list of the top places you can check out in your own backyard.

New South Wales – South Coast
Residents of NSW can currently travel throughout the state and between the ACT and VIC. Instead of hopping borders though, why not take a trip to the unspoilt natural beauty that is the South Coast?
Located only a few hours south of Sydney, this region is known for having one of the southernmost subtropical rainforests in Australia and a stunning coastline to boot. There’s also the Illawarra escarpment, Budderoo national park and more secret surf spots that you can hope to find in one lifetime.
Australian Capital Territory - Canberra
While you may be tempted to leave the country’s capital territory for a weekend away, we reckon you can’t go wrong with tour of Canberra’s many inspirational, beautiful and interesting sights.
Think about it. There’s the Australian War Memorial, the National Portrait Gallery, New Parliament House, Lake Burley Griffin, the National Gallery and Questacon for the kids. What’s more, you’ll be pumping much-needed money back into the local economy (an economy that’s sure to be struggling after the cancellation of Floriade Festival this spring).
Remember, you can always duck away to the South Coast of New South Wales once the weather begins to warm up again.
Victoria – Yarra Valley
We love online pokies, don’t get us wrong. But the promise of a trip to the wine capital of Victoria is more than enough incentive to get us on the road.
A must-visit region towards the end of winter, the Yarra Valley is an hour’s drive from Melbourne and home to a huge selection of top shelf wineries plus cosy pubs, chocolate factories and fantastic dairy products. If that’s not enough, there’s also the Healesville sanctuary where you can see the rare and elusive platypus in its natural habitat.
Queensland – Cape York
Unfortunately if you’re living in Queensland, interstate travel is a no go. The good thing is that the Smart State is massive, so if you want to experience something truly unique, you only need to go as far as the Cape York outback.
The northernmost area of our continent, Cape York features an abundance of Indigenous culture including a diverse array of local communities and rock art. And while the Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival, which only happens every two years, has been cancelled this year, Queenslanders can still spend their time visiting the region’s swimming holes, fishing, strolling along pristine beaches and otherwise enjoying the great outdoors.
South Australia – Eyre Peninsula
Home to some of the country’s best beaches and a coastline that will leave your jaw swinging, the Eyre Peninsula is a popular destination for South Australian’s looking to escape Adelaide and surrounds.
You can head out on a relatively small charter boat and dive with massive great white sharks, see dolphins up close and personal and try seafood so fresh you’ll swear it came straight from the ocean to your plate.
Better yet, Eyre Peninsula locals are known for being incredibly relaxed and laidback, so you’ll feel welcome at every turn. Take a break from the city and check it out. The residents (and the sharks) will be awaiting your arrival.
Tasmania – Northern Tassie
Tasmanians are more or less confined to travel within their state, but with a smorgasbord of high-quality beef, pork, berries, cherries, vegetables and wild fish, we don’t hear them complaining.
Northern Tasmania in particular is flush with good food, but the Cataract Gorge has also been known to put on a powerful display when it floods. This means you can fill up and head out on an easy-going tour. Then, if you’re feeling somewhat sporty, you can go and play a few rounds of sand dune golf at Barnbougle Dunes golf course in Bridport.
Western Australia - Kalgoorlie
Regional travel in West Oz is currently allowed and the Kimberley Region has only just opened up to visitors, but we reckon that the historic mining town of Kalgoorlie should also get a look in.
Situated over 6 hours from Perth by car, Kalgoorlie is known the country over as being steeped in folklore. You can still see the legacy left behind from the goldfield days of yesteryear in its architecture, sights and attractions. Take the Indian Pacific and the Prospector train for a hit of old-timey nostalgia or tour the Golden Quest Discovery Trail for unique insights into this Wild West town.
Northern Territory
You’re able to travel freely through the Northern Territory at the moment, but there are restrictions in place for travel to isolated communities.
That being said, you can still check out the beautiful landscapes of Central Australia and practice safe social distancing practices. The McDonnell Ranges, Kings Canyon and Palm Valley are three must-see destinations that will leave you in awe. There’s also the 90-minute Journey The Dreamtime cultural walk in Aboriginal Springs to keep in mind when things go back to normal.
