Aussie Christmas traditions 🎄
Love Christmas?
We sure do. We especially love the fact that Aussies have the best Christmas traditions too. What are your favourites? We’ve listed ours below. From surfing Santas to carols by candlelight and festive Xmas road trips, nobody does Christmas like Australians (and your mates at Uptown Pokies).
1. Surfing Santa
We’ve all seen photos of Santa at Christmas. Usually, he’s trying to fit down a chimney, working hard at the North Pole or piloting his sleigh across the sky.
In Australia though, Santa dresses and acts a little bit differently. Not only does he don boardshorts, but he’s often seen riding the waves or rocking a Santa hat while in the lineup. So if you’re down the beach on Chrissy day in Oz, don’t be alarmed if Santa runs past with a waxed-up longboard under his arm.
2. Christmas Street Parties
If there’s one beloved Aussie Christmas tradition that we love, it’s getting together with everyone on your street for a relaxing street party.
The air is warm and the conversation flows. Before you know it, you’ve had more dip and Christmas beverages to last you till next December. Street parties are notoriously fun and hundreds of thousands of Aussies take part in this tradition. Not only does it give you a good idea to catch up with your neighbours, it’s also a good warm up or warm down from the more formal Christmas festivities.
3. Carols by candlelight
Practically every city across Australia celebrates their own version of Carols by Candlelight, which is a tradition that originated in Australia in the 19th century.
Usually what happens is that hundreds and sometimes thousands of people go to their local park or footy oval to sing carols (yep… you guessed it) by candlelight. There’s often an orchestra or some type of ensemble from town plus food and drinks if it’s an especially legit event. All profits or donations collected are then given to a special charity or foundation.
4. Boxing Day Test
After the family gatherings have ended, the last present has been unwrapped and all the prawns begin to smell funky, it’s time to kick back and enjoy the Boxing Day Test.
This normally involves another BBQ, some catching up with mates over a beer (or two) and plenty of armchair commentary from all involved. Of course, if you can get tickets to the test then that’s where the magic happens. But watching from the comfort of your couch surrounded by good friends and reasonably priced beer is also ok.
5. The Aussie Christmas BBQ
Don’t get us wrong… we love the idea of glazed ham, turkey and enough stuffing to fill the family couch, but let’s be honest – dining tables in Australia do it better.
Instead of pork and birds, we prefer to run with shellfish and crustaceans instead. Think prawns, clams and lobster (if you’re lucky). Heck, we might even throw some lamb chops on the grill too just to keep you guessing. Pair it all with some soft white bread and tomato sauce and what do you get? A stomach ache for sure, but one that’s worth it.
Oh… and everything is cooked on the BBQ. It wouldn’t be an Aussie Christmas if it wasn’t. So don’t be afraid if you’re invited to an Australian Xmas lunch or dinner. Chances are that it’s just like a festive mealtime back home.
Just way better.
6. Abbreviating every word – even “Christmas”
While this may not be an exclusively Chrissy condition, Aussies take abbreviating words to a whole new level when December rolls around. Not sure what we mean? Translate this:
“Hey, Davo. I’m going to visit the rub-a-dub-dub for a few schooies then hit the bottle-o to grab a case of New. Are you keen for a few bevvies? I’ve gotta grab a prezzy for the cheese and kisses and the tin lids while I’m in town too”.
If you manage to figure out what’s going on, then chances are you’re an Ozzie. If not, well, we’ll give you a pass this time. Just don’t ask us why Australians abbreviate everything.
Our answer will always be “Dunno, mate”.
7. Festive road trips
Finally, the last awesome Aussie ritual that many of us partake in is the annual up the coast/down the coast road trip.
This could involve hitting the highway with your mates, with your family or simply driving solo, although that’s for sure not as much fun. Just load up the car with lollies, plan your route and get ready for an adventure.
You can visit loved ones on the way or simply kick back and enjoy your vacation – it’s up to you! All we know is that after a few days or weeks in close quarters, you’ll all be totally ok with scheduling another road trip (in 12 months time).
